Lashing on Stems

Rough stem laid on gunwales for fitting

Stem lashed to gunwales

Today I worked on getting the stems made and lashed on, and hoped to get the keelson on, as well, but didn't get quite that far. Spent a lot of time looking and trying to make sure the overall shape of the kayak is good - and big enough to fit into.

First squared the underside of the gunwale tips so they are flat, straight and square, so stems will sit vertical. Then cut the square grove for the spline or 'key' to prevent longitudinal movement, and lashed them in place.

Made a temporary brace to hold the keel stringer (keelson) centered, and finally think I have the shape of the keel set, so I will be able to peg the keelson to the stems next session.
